Making Toast in the Oven

Ninety nine percent of the time if you want a slice of toast, then you’ll simply pop a slice of bread in the toaster – after all, it’s something we do every day without even really thinking about it!

But what if you’re somewhere without a toaster – or your toaster is broken? What if you are making breakfast for a crowd and need lots of toast all at once?

Well there’s a very easy alternative – and that’s to use your oven! Making toast in the oven is not only straightforward, it can actually be easier in some cases, especially when preparing toast en masse!

And whilst there are a couple of other methods for making toast without a toaster, using the oven is the only one that doesn’t require you to be ‘hands on’ throughout. That gives you the chance to quickly do something else as your bread gradually toasts to perfection!

Steps to Make Toast in the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Spread the slices of bread that you want to cook out on a baking sheet.
  • When the oven is warm, pop the baking sheet in on the middle shelf.
  • Cook for 5 minutes (without opening the oven door). Then open the oven and turn the slices over.
  • Cook for a further 4 to 5 minutes, checking often to ensure the toast isn’t going too brown.

Making toast with frozen bread

The good news is that making toast in the oven is possible even if your bread is frozen!

  • First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Use a butter knife to separate the frozen slices from each other.
  • Next, spread out the slices on a baking sheet and place them in the oven on the middle shelf.
  • Cook as for fresh bread, but allow 6 minutes of cooking time before flipping and then cook for around another 5 minutes until golden.

So now you know how to make plain toast in the oven – but why not try something a little more exciting?

Here are some ideas to turn your toast into something special.

  • Beat together one egg, a little milk and a few drops of vanilla and pour it over your toast before baking to create a simple French toast.
  • Dust the toast slices with a little cinnamon sugar.
  • Once the bread is toasted on one side and almost toasted on the other, sprinkle it with grated cheese and continue to bake until the cheese has melted.
  • Spread the cooked toast slices with Nutella, then top with slices of sliced banana. For an irresistible sweet/salty flavor, sprinkle crushed salted peanuts over the top of the banana slices.
