The origins of the margarita are mysterious, but there is a story that Mexican restaurant owner, Carlos (Danny) Herrera created the first! Apparently he was allergic to all sorts of alcohol, except tequila. While he was able to drink tequila, he didn’t like drinking it straight, and came up with this classic cocktail.

There are hundreds of margarita variations, but this spin on a classic retains its famous flavors, with a few additions to heighten its taste and leave you wanting more!

While the best tequila for margaritas is up for debate, we have a few favorites:

Patron Silver Tequila: With its smooth and versatile blanco flavor, this classic option will please all tequila connoisseurs. This tequila, stored in stainless steels containers and  unaged, has a slight fruity flavor, with hints of agave.

Tapatio Blanco: If you prefer fruity margaritas, this is a great option as it’s bursting with crisp sweetness

Grand Mayan Ultra Aged: This tequila boasts oaky, vanilla flavors as a result of its ageing. It’s quite a step up from the previous two listed, and is palate pleasing, even straight up!

Sauza Conmemorativo: Works perfectly with our Chili’s El Presidente Margarita, with its slightly off-gold color as a result of it being aged for four years in bourbon casks. It has a lingering smoky finish, with blends of woody flavors, which makes it versatile and perfect as a cocktail base.

While you can use whichever tequila you prefer, we find the Sauza Commemorativo blends well and works deliciously with the other deeper flavors in this Chili’s El President Margarita. Hints of orange from the Cointreau and the warming brandy take this margarita to the next level.

If you are serving a group, you can easily make enough to fill a pitcher by multiplying the quantities in the recipe by five.
