Crockpot French Toast

French Toast is one of our favorite breakfast dishes, perfect for those lazy weekend mornings when you have time to savor every bite!

Eggy bread coated in cinnamon, drizzled with maple syrup, dusted with powdered sugar and served up with some crispy, streaky bacon will have everyone’s mouth watering.

And the good news is that its very simple to make French Toast in the crockpot the night before, then warm it just before serving… giving you even more time to relax in the morning!

The Best Bread for Crockpot French Toast

Either use bread that is turning slightly stale, or opt for Italian or French bread. Bread that is slightly harder works best in this recipe.

We also recommend using cubes of bread or torn slices, as they fit much more nicely into the crockpot.

Crockpot French Toast Variations

This recipe is delicious, rich and moist but also perfectly versatile.

It can easily be made dairy-free, gluten-free or simply just healthier!

To make this recipe dairy free, you can use coconut milk, almond milk or any other dairy-free milk as a substitute for cow’s milk.

For gluten-free, you can swap the bread for gluten-free bread.

If you’re attempting to make this treat healthier, you can make a few changes; instead of using sugar, you can skip it completely, or opt for a natural sugar.

Using semi-skimmed milk will help reduce the calories – and rather than serving this dish up with the traditional side of bacon or sausages, serve it with fruit on the side instead!

  1. Grease a large crockpot (preferably 2.5-4 quart) with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Arrange the bread into the bottom of the crockpot; try and spread it out and layer evenly, but don’t make it too thick.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla. Drizzle the mixture over the bread and use a fork or spatula to press the bread down to help soak it up.
  4. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour or up to 24 hours.
  5. Cook on the low setting for 3-4 hours or high for 1.5-2 hours. The bread should look dry and set, and shouldn’t appear wet or gooey.
  6. Plate the French Toast up and garnish as desired.
