Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe

What makes gluten free banana Bread even better? Chocolate chips! I love how the tender and moist gluten free banana bread is, and it only gets better with melted mini chocolate chips. 

Chocolate Chip Gluten Free Banana Bread is such an easy snack or treat. You only need one bowl, and a few gluten free pantry staples to mix it together. 

You can also bake this recipe in muffin tins to make gluten free chocolate chip banana muffins!

How to make gluten free dairy free banana bread with chocolate chips?

This recipe is very similar to my gf banana bread. I cut back on the spices so they aren’t fighting with the chocolate chips for the spotlight.

There is still cinnamon, but just not quite as much as I use if I’m making plain gluten free banana bread.

I like using mini chocolate chips in my gluten free banana bread, but I’ll use regular chocolate chips too. I guess it depends on my mood!

What I like about using mini chocolate chips in banana bread is that you can ensure there are chocolate chips in every bite without adding too much chocolate and making your gluten free chocolate chip banana bread too dense. 

Depending on how chocolatey you want your gluten free banana bread to be, you can add more chocolate chips, or a little less. 

I honestly rarely measure my chocolate chips when I make gluten free banana bread. Pour some in, stir, and then pour some more in until it has a sufficient amount of chocolate chips.

What kind of chocolate chips are best to add to gluten free banana bread?

I used Enjoy Life Mini Chips, since they are dairy free.

If you don’t need a dairy free chocolate chip banana bread, you can use any brand of mini chocolate chips that is gluten free.

Most chocolate chips are gluten free, but I always check the label. Some chocolate chips may be processed in a facility where cross contamination with gluten is a risk.

We really like Guittard chocolate (I think some are produced in a wheat-free facility). I’ll also buy Hershey’s or Nestle.

Have you seen Nestle’s new free-from Simply Delicious Chocolate Morsels?

They don’t have a mini version, that I know of, but are an alternative if you can’t find Enjoy Life Baking Chocolate near you. 

How do you keep chocolate chips from sinking in bread?

No one wants all their chocolate chips to sink to the bottom of their banana loaf and melt!

To prevent your chocolate chips from sinking, make sure your banana bread batter is thick enough to suspend them.

It also helps using mini chocolate chips. Because mini chips are smaller, they are more easily suspended and less likely to sink to the bottom of your gluten free banana bread.

If you still have problems with your chocolate chips sinking you can toss them with a little gluten free flour. However, I’ve never found it necessary to add flour when using my gluten and dairy free banana bread recipe because the batter is thick and easily holds the chocolate chips. 

This batter is thick enough to suspend chopped figs! (Check out my gluten free banana bread with figs to see what I mean.)

Can I add nuts to my gluten free chocolate chip banana bread?

If you want a chocolate chip banana walnut loaf, add some chopped walnuts to your batter with the chocolate chips.

I love making (and snacking on) sugared walnuts and sugared pecans, which would work great in this recipe. The candied nuts add a little extra sweetness and crunch. Go ahead and sprinkle some on top, too! 

How to make dairy free gluten free banana bread?

My gluten free banana bread recipe is dairy free. It gets the moisture it needs from the mashed bananas and oil. It doesn’t need any more moisture!

Making the batter thin with milk will actually make your loaf dry out faster, and will have more of a cake-like texture.

How to make vegan gluten free banana bread?

You can easily make this gluten free chocolate chip banana bread vegan by using an egg replacer for the eggs in the recipe. My go-to is Bob’s Red Mill’s Egg Replacer. You can also make a flax egg, which works perfectly in this recipe!

Be sure that you use vegan chocolate chips, too.

Ingredients
  

  • 1.5 Mashed Banana (ripe – about 3 bananas)
  • 2 Egg
  • 0.5 Brown Sugar firmly packed (about 4 ounces by weight)
  • 0.25 Granulated Sugar (about 2 ounces by weight)
  • 0.25 Oil (vegetable, melted coconut, avocado, canola, etc.)
  • 1 Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 1.5 Baking Powder
  • 0.5 Baking Soda
  • 0.5 Salt
  • 1 Xanthan Gum (omit if you use a blend that already has xanthan gum)
  • 2 All-Purpose Gluten Free Flour (see note)
  • 0.25 Ground Cinnamon
  • 0.5 Mini Chocolate Chips

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease 9×4 loaf pan and line with parchment paper if desired.
  • Mix together the mashed banana, brown sugar, white sugar, oil, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
  • Add the baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and xanthan gum and mix until evenly combined.
  • Add the gluten free flour and mix until combined.
  • Add the mini chocolate chips, and stir until evenly distributed.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. If desired, sprinkle the top with a few extra mini chocolate chips.
  • Bake for 50-60 minutes or until the bread springs back when lightly touched and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean. (If you use a wider 9×5 loaf pan it will bake for 45-55 minutes.)
  • Let cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes before removing from the pan.
