Juan Valdez Fizz Recipe with Cold Brew & Sour Cherry

Whether you’re sober, interested in drinking less, participating in Dry January, or simply love any delicious beverage, this crowdpleaser is a cut above your average spirit-free drink.

This refreshing mocktail recipe comes to Food Fanatic courtesy of Brice Scouten, the bar manager at the Durham Hotel in downtown Durham, North Carolina.

Choosing Your Ingredients

Depending on your budget and desired level of involvement, you can make your own syrups or purchase them.

Monin is a popular syrup maker and a natural addition to your home bar with its dark chocolate syrup and tart cherry syrup.

You could opt for coffee syrup from Yes Cocktail Co., or Blossoms Syrup Sour Cherry from Milk Street, depending on your preferences.

Make your own cold brew coffee or buy some from Starbucks or another purveyor.

Scouten recommends using Fevertree Mediterranean Tonic.

Use fresh lemon juice for best results, but in the famous words of Ina Garten, store-bought is fine.

To Buy or to Make

If you’re purchasing the ingredients, this recipe is incredibly fast to make — measure, combine, shake, strain, drink.

And if you plan to make this often, or more than a single serving, buying your ingredients may be the way to go in order to achieve the shelf life or quantity you need.

No doubt you could use the syrups in a range of other mocktails — or in some cases, just to elevate your morning coffee!

Making More Mocktails

If you love this drink or are looking for further inspiration, Scouten shared two more mocktail recipes with us, so be sure to check them out.

One is more ambitious — a banana maple shrub that needs to rest for 5-7 days in your fridge — so depending on your patience and level planning prowess, take on this one that’s bound to impress.

He also gave us details on how to make a sweet tea-based drink with blood orange, ginger, honey, and lemon.

If that doesn’t sound appealing, we probably can’t be friends.

(Just kidding, but seriously, what’s not to love?)
