Can we talk about the “moment” that sweet and salty is having right now?

I fully support the sweet and salty movement. Maple bacon donuts, sea salt chocolate chip cookies, chocolate pretzel ANYTHING – I’ll have one of each, thanks so much.

I am not ashamed to admit that there is a particular time of the month when I appreciate sweet and salty a bit more than usual. It is during this time that I mix up a bowl of potato chips and M&Ms, grab a bottle of wine and my heating pad, and hole up in my room with a stack of magazines and the Bravo channel.

There is nothing that my irritable, hormonally charged emotions love more than feeling superior to D-List celebrities that are behaving badly.

These junk food marshmallow squares are their own brand of genius – why should cereal be having all the fun? And lucky for me, Shelly Jaronsky, the blogger behind The Cookies and Cups Cookbook (and one of my very best friends), is incredibly well-versed in marshmallow treats.

You might call her Dr. Marshmallow Treats. Because if a PHD in melting marshmallows and butter was a thing, she’d have it. Unlike myself, whose PHD would be in eating donuts. Don’t look down your nose at me – the jelly-filled ones can be a bit difficult to navigate. IT’S A LEGITIMATE LIFE SKILL, PEOPLE.

These sweet and salty no-bake treats are just one of the many recipes I have bookmarked in Shelly’s cookbook. From sheet cakes to muffins and quick and easy dinners, her recipes are fun twists on some of my favorite classics – I have SO many pages earmarked to try!

These junk food marshmallow squares went to the front of the list for obvious reasons. A combination of pretzels, potato chips, and popcorn are coated in melted marshmallows and browned butter, creating a chewy, crunchy, sweet and salty dream of a bar. They come together quickly and are NO BAKE, which is always handy during the summer months.

Whip these up the next time you’re having a craving. You won’t regret it!

Ingredients

  • 4 Salted Butter
  • 8 Miniature Marshmallows
  • 2 Coarsely Crushed Wavy Potato Chips
  • 2 Coarsely Crushed Pretzels
  • 1 Popped Buttered Popcorn Microwave or prepared store-bought

Instructions

  • Line a 9×9-inch baking dish with foil and lightly coat it with cooking spray.
  • In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat, then bring it to a boil. Once it starts boiling, swirl the pan constantly until the butter passes the foamy phase and becomes a deep amber color.
  • Immediately add the marshmallows and continue stirring until the marshmallows are melted. Remove the pan from heat.
  • Quickly stir in the potato chips, pretzels, popcorn and make sure to coat them in the melted marshmallows.
  • Transfer the mixture immediately to the prepared dish, pressing it evenly but without packing the mixture too tightly.
  • Allow the mixture to cool, then cut into squares.
