Mexican Hot Chocolate Shots Recipe

Kick off your holiday party with these fun festive Mexican hot chocolate shots. It’s the perfect amount of chocolate, cayenne and booze to get everyone warmed up.

So I’m imagining myself all ready for a holiday party, waiting for friends to arrive at my door. I’ve got a big pot of hot chocolate on the stove. The fancy mugs are lined up in the serving tray with an assortment of pretty cookies. I am ready in my hostess apron to welcome them in from the cold…  Nah! Who am I kidding?

That is so typical, and so not me or my friends. How about we spice things up a little to get the party started? I mean literally spice it up… like with cayenne and cinnamon. Oh, and some tequila or vanilla vodka to really add some heat. I’m talking about fun, festive, Mexican Hot Chocolate Shots. That should warm them up! (Adults only of course.)

While I love chocolate, a whole mug full of rich hot chocolate is a bit much for me. I get tired of the sweet taste and then I start craving all kinds of salty junk food, which is never a good thing. These Mexican hot chocolate shots are perfect to meet that sweet craving. It’s just the right amount of chocolate with a little something extra.

There’s a lot a variance on Mexican hot chocolate recipes out there. Many of them have nutmeg, chili powder and vanilla included in them. From what I’ve read, I’m not even sure authentic Mexican hot chocolate has all these things, but the inclusion of a chili spice seems to be popular anyway. I was not going for any kind of subtle taste in these shots so I skipped the nutmeg… I wanted to taste the cayenne!

Don’t worry though, it’s not an insane amount but if you’re sensitive, skip the extra sprinkle over the marshmallow. The sprinkle made it look nice, but also gave it an extra kick.

Be sure to dress up your shot glasses so pretty that they can’t be refused. I’ve dipped the edges in dark chocolate and my favorite shimmering sanding sugar. You can also shave just a little chocolate on top of the marshmallows or use whipped cream instead of marshmallows.

Remember, there’s no reason to save these hot chocolate shots for dessert. Surprise your guests with delicious welcome shots instead. If you are searching for an after dinner dessert cocktail, I recommend these chocolate hazelnut espresso martinis. Or, I guess you could always make another round of hot chocolate shots too!

Whenever you want to drink them, these shot drinks are perfect for the holidays. I’m so excited to have been able to share this recipe with you for 12 days of Cocktails!

  • 5 Vanilla Vodka Or tequila
  • 5 Godiva Liqueur

  • Whisk together the milk, cream, cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon and cayenne in a small saucepan.
  • Heat to just a boil while stirring.

  • Dip the rim of your shot glass in the melted chocolate and then into a dish of your favorite sprinkles. Keep it pointing down for a minute so the chocolate does not slide down the glass.
  • Add a 1/2 ounce each of vanilla vodka and Godiva liquor to each shot glass. Top off with 2 Tablespoons of the warm hot chocolate mixture.
  • Garnish with mini marshmallows and an extra sprinkle of cayenne.
