What Is Durkee Green Bean Casserole?

Most frequently referred to as French’s green bean casserole the original green bean casserole recipe is credited to a woman named Dorcas Reilly.

An employee of the Campbell Soup Company, Dorcas is said to have dreamed up the traditional green bean casserole recipe back in 1955.

This American classic was topped with crunchy Durkee onions at the time though Durkee Famous Foods was later acquired in the 1980s.

Durkee onions would ultimately become French’s crispy friend onions although the rest of this easy side dish is exactly as it once was.

Green Bean Casserole Durkee Recipe

To make this classic green bean casserole recipe you will need:

Ingredients

  • Green beans – I prefer using fresh green beans, ideally French style. Frozen green beans also work. In a pinch canned green beans will work, but you’ll notice a difference in both flavor and texture.
  • Creamy soup – Typically you will use a can of cream of mushroom soup, but some people opt for cream of celery soup or cream of chicken soup.
  • Fried onions – Purists will use French’s crispy fried onions, which is what I also recommend and use in my own home.
  • Seasoning – A bit of black pepper and salt to taste help round out the flavors of this creamy green bean casserole recipe.

Gear

  • Large bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Casserole dish

As with many beloved favorites, over the years lots of variations of green bean casserole have emerged though the original has stood the test of time.

Some people prefer to make homemade cream of mushroom soup, which certainly takes longer to make but is absolutely delicious.

Add a bunch of cheddar cheese or even Velveeta to make a cheesy green bean casserole that’s particularly a hit with little ones at Thanksgiving dinner.

You can add a bit of butter, a splash of white wine or a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce or even soy sauce to the mixture to amp up the flavor.

The best part? It’s almost impossible to screw up green bean casserole. Want to make your own fried onions or caramelized onions for topping? Go for it!
