SunnyD Has Joined the Spiked Seltzer Craze

Ok, so we all know that SunnyD isn’t real orange juice, right?! I mean, it only contains 5% juice. The rest is water and high fructose corn syrup!

Despite knowing this, I still love the stuff. At least I think I do – it’s been a really long time since I’ve cracked open a SunnyD.

I’m sure I would still like it, but I’m guessing it would be more in a nostalgia kind of way. But SunnyD Vodka Seltzer? That I will gladly get my hands on!

These days I prefer organic orange juice with extra pulp, mostly because my little tax deductions won’t drink it all up like they do with everything else I buy.

As a kid, I thought SunnyD had what I would describe as a ‘spiciness’ to it. It was probably all the sugar, but it was unlike every other orange juice out there.

With the seltzer craze in full swing and every company wanting in on the action, it was only a matter of time when SunnyD would join in the fun.

What Is SunnyD Vodka Seltzer?

Spiked SunnyD is an alcoholic drink created after the company heard that people were using their product as a vodka mixer.

"Consumers are passionate about this iconic brand, rooted in nostalgia but with a taste that resonates today. Many have told us that they enjoy SunnyD as a mixer and asked for this product. So, we looked at the hard seltzer category, and thought, good, but we can do better. And SunnyD Vodka Seltzer was born," said Ilene Bergenfeld, CMO of Harvest Hill Beverage Company.

SunnyD Vodka Seltzer is made with real fruit juice, zero grams of sugar and clocks in at 4.5% ABV.

The Evolution of Spiked Seltzers

It all started with non-alcoholic seltzers becoming all the rage among those wanting a fizzy pop-like beverage without extra sugar and added calories.

Brands like La Croix seemed to arrive overnight and became a staple in many homes. Soon after, folks began using them as a mixer with their vodka.

They were flavorful and contained far fewer calories than most mixers.

White Claw then entered the chat. Following their massive popularity, spiked seltzers exploded onto to the scene and knocked craft beer off their pedestal.

People fell in love with seltzer drinks and started ditching the high calorie, high carbohydrate loaded beers. In rebuttal, beer companies were forced to come out with their own versions to compete with the likes of White Claw and Truly.

Over the last few years what experts thought would die like Zima in the 90s, has quickly become the industry’s #1 selling alcoholic beverage to no one’s surprise.
